When I tried to start my 2000 Expedition the other day nothing happened. I
tried to jump start it and that didn't work, so I don't think it's the
battery. When I turn the key, the engine doesn't turn over, it just clicks
once. I called the dealership and was told that it was possibly the
solinoid. I have no idea what a solinoid is, where it is located, or
anything else about fixing cars. Can anyone help me?

Like, call the dealer again and ask them to come pick it up and fix
it?

If you don' t know anythign about cars/trucks, then trying to fix it
yourself is not likely to be a satisfactory solution.

The solenoid is a heavy duty relay, usually located close to the starter
motor.
When you turn the key to start, it operates the solenoid which passes
current direct from the battery to the starter via a heavy duty cable. It
can be difficult to get to, but a mechanic could probably change it in less
than an hour. Probably cost about $30 +labour.

Of course, it may not be the solenoid, other possibilities are a jammed
starter, or faulty starter.

Best to leave it to your Dealership

You should have the battery cables checked. I have heard of other Expedition
owners having a problem where the battery cables fail inside the insulation.
They look OK, but in fact they can't carry enough current to operate the
starter. See http://www.explorerforum.com/Singleton/web/pages/battery.html
(this is for an Explorer, but the Expedition situation is similar).

For a 2000 Expedition the starter solenoid is bolted to the starter. See

I suggest you join the Expedition Owner's Group Mailing List. Lots of
experienced Expeditions owners there that provide excellent advice. See
http://mail.xpog.com/mailman/listinfo/expedition .
