Soft grinding noise when engine under load accelerating starting around 1500 rpm and gets louder with increased rpm but ceases when cruising.
No engine management warning light showing, no black smoke, no drop in mpg, oil level max, no oil leaks, gear changes smooth can't recreate when revving engine in park.

It's probably the rear diff, which are known to fail. When were the driveline components serviced? If not been done, then check for silver in the rear diff and PTU oils, which will be the bearings on the way out.
The Haldex fluid should be clear, but if it's black then it shows the clutches are wearing.

Thanks for your reply.
Had haldex serviced and rear dif replaced about 50,000 miles 4\5 years ago by well known specialist in Worcestershire due to failing bearing.
The noise is definitely from the front of car and not the drone noise previously heard from the rear dif.

The PTU is known to fail too, so I'd start there by removing a sample of oil for examination.
