Hi ya I am thinking of putting a snorkel on my 1988 3.5 v8 twin carb 90. Is it a bad idea if not I know I need to extend my axle breather pipes and gearbox. Is there anything else I should do. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
 
Spray everything electrical. Leads plugs distributor coil etc in chainsaw chain lubricant works brilliantly for rejecting water :)
 
Hmmm you may end up calling the AA if you go wading without fully waterproofing the ign system. You can get a kit for dizzy and coil.
 
i have made a snorkel for my 3.5 because i use it for off roading mainly ,
i like to have the reassurance that i cant accidentally suck up water
i dont go wadeing but a few times i have been in a mud hole with enough water to get worried
 
I was running mine around a muddy wet trial on sunday through water 3-4 ft deep pulling out diesels that had stalled in water and getting stuck in water hokes and spraying the whole engine with water when trying to get out without a single problem.

Ive got a rear snorkel and sprayed everything electrical with chainsaw chain oil to keep it water and mud free. Worked perfectly

You'd get both barrels from the environment brigade
the forestry sector uses special bio chain oil these days to prevent ground contamination

Its widely availabe stuff that I use. Sold by a reputable and international lubricant supplier for the specific purpose of chain lubricant. Plus I only used a 500 ml aerosol.

Ebay mush. The classic trick on a 4 pot 2.25 petrol is a marigold over dizzy and a rubber johnny (not used) on the coil. They dont make 9 fingered gloves unfortunately, apart from in (insert rural community of choice here).
 
I used spray grease on my lada niva years ago. I nice thick coating every now and again....never missed a beat no matter how deep the water was :)
 
Good tip on the chain grease lads :)

i have used spay Waxoil type stuff before which worked

does it not stink when warmed up? or is that.. not stink more than usual? :D
 
Doesn't really answer the question though - I have twin filters on the SUs and they haven't sucked water yet as they are high up but there is always that one time. I looked at a normal barrel filter box with some flexi pipe out to the roll cage. Got the parts somewhere but never fitted it. Breather pipes from the axle/gearbox is always a good move IMHO

Ive got a custom pipe sending the intake to the rear tub but mines EFI I don't know if there are more places on the carb motor for water to get in ? Need to have a strip down for water ingress check :)
 
I saw an interesting Mod on the V8 distributor recently. Sometimes you can get steam off of the exhaust manifolds condensing in the distributor cap. So this cap had two holes drilled in it. One side had a pipe connecting it to a vacuum on the intake manifold. The other pipe routed into the cab so you always get dry air drawn through the cap.
I thought it was interesting but I'm not doing it to mine.
 
On my 3.9 serp disco i put the coil and amp in a sandwich box and put an 8mm breather tube on it. Seems to help . I may put another pipe with a vacuum feed on it just to pull the hot air out of it as it does get warm and may cause a problem in the summer. I also made made a splash protector that is a bit of rigid plastic cut out the bottom of a storage box. It mounts on the water pump and is then bent over the top of the dizzy. Liberal amounts of silicone grease and silicone spray and it seems fine.

I have to disagree, i tried for years with various sprays/greases/rubber gloves/cable ties/you name it/plastic shields/drain holes blocked up and the dizzy cap was sealed on with silicone and fresh air supplied AND vacuum vented at one time and then supplied by compressed air and still no matter what, if the dizzy was chilled you would get condensation on the inside from the crankcase vapours

and it would miss its cock off

but

the original question is snorkel and yes if you go anywhere near water you should fit a snorkel, why wouldnt you?

bent conrods are a lot worse than misfires!
