I was reading some other posts, and wondered if anyone has had a snapped speedo cable right at the transfer box. Ours has snapped and left the metal rod like thing from the end of the cable still sitting in the transfer box. It looks like there might be a threaded something that it is sitting in, are we right? Any ideas on how to get the broken end out? Such a small space to work in, and don't want to start dismantling the whole lot to get it out. So far we have managed to find law abiding citizens to drive behind for the ridiculous 20mph speed limits here.

Thanks, found that earlier and tomorrow is now the day to get it out of there and the end of the speedo cable out of it, and not having to follow those "good" drivers doing the 20mph speed limit.

Is this applicable to D2 also, these interchangeable speedo drive gears? Thanks for the link.
Seems that you dont know much about your vehicle if you ask that... the D2's speedo is fully electronic managed by the SLABS ECU

Ok thanks. Well, that is something we all now know, thanks to your endless knowledge.

My n reg 300 TDI disco had an electronic speedo (ie wire not cable)

I don't know if the 200s had a mechanical.

Well, we took the drive gear out and still can't get the end of the speedo cable out, so just ordered another one. Difficult to find a black one, but it is now on it's way. Drive gear housing was so much easier to get out than we thought it would be, and in good condition, even the drive gear is in good condition, shame to have to replace it.

Thanks everyone for your help

Hi All, well another instalment in the broken speedo cable saga. So, we ordered the new black speedo drive gear and then went to Craddocks and said we need a speedo cable to fit in it, as the new speedo cable we had was too big. Another speedo cable arrived, and guess what, it is also too big for the speedo drive gear. Hubby tried to drill out the remnants of the old speedo cable from the old speedo drive gear, and it has broken the slot it goes into! Any ideas?

Did the speedo cable go into the transfer box?
If it did a black speedo drive won’t fit the cable. These are designed for electronic pick ups. They have a smaller square end.

Hi, just realised that, so will have to get a different coloured speedo drive gear, close to the amount of teeth on the black one, and then hopefully the cable will fit. On holiday at the moment, so will tackle it when we get back.

Back from holiday and new speedo drive gear, red one this time, fitted and cable fitted into it. Just a quick back and front across the car park, and the speedo jiggled a bit, so going out tomorrow to test it against the speed of the other car. Keep your fingers crossed that we may have finally hit on the correct amount of bits that fit together. At this rate we could compete with Rimmer Bros the amount of different cables and speedo drive gears we have in stock now!!!

If all else fails you could maybe use these people.
I have used them in the past when building kit cars as you often have to match a sender drive to an after market or "sourced from another vehicle".
They were good, quick and accurate.

Success!!! Speedo is slightly slower than it should be, but that doesn't matter, we have a speedo, YAY!! Thanks everyone for all your input, no doubt we will be back with the next problem, hopefully not too soon eh!!
