1991 RRC 3.9 V8 auto.

Ok, so a little job yesterday in the sunshine has turned into nightmare.

I changed the plugs (I fitted the last set, always careful not to over tighten). 7 were a breeze, 1 snapped (the forward most one on the nearside if it makes any difference).

The centre of the plug has come out, leaving the thread. Today, full of hope and positive thinking I borrowed a set of easy-outs but I still cannot shift it.

Any ideas please:(

Can you safely add some heat? it may mean removing the injectors/carbs. Failing that I'd be just as stumped as you are. I'd guess the head will need to come off.
 
lots lol. and pretty fiddly, especially on a v8. u will need to get a new had kit aswell, Gaskets bolts etc
 
Drill out the core of the spark plug thread bit with progressively larger left hand drill bits. When you're done use a bit of small diameter hose taped to a vacuum cleaner to suck out swarf.
 
Saw somebody on hear weld a bolt to the remaining bit of plug and get out that way. Not something I have tried but seen it done.
 
I suppose it depends how much of the plug is left. I bet a good old motor engineer would find away of getting it out.
 
can you tap in (using a hammer) a piece of square abr that you have tapered at one end, this will bite and allow you to remove using a wrench or socket?
 
I wouldn't, that is a fun way to punch the plug into the cylinder and strip the threads.

if you try this please do not have your head over the new plug when running....

I have had one blow out on me.....

Have removed broken plugs by tapping a suitably sized file tang into them. Does not always work though.
 
Depending on how bad it is it may be a head off job - if it is take the opportunity to check cam, followers etc. But if the remains of the plug is just the lower threaded portion I once had a bit of an issue on a Cortina. Had to take the head off, went and saw a mate of mine and his Dad who was a rather good engineer said "no problem" passed a hacksaw blade through the middle of what was left of the plug and gently sawed through the casing then undid it with his fingers. There was a very slight cut in the thread but it didn't affect the plug seat so all was well. HTH.

Yep done that as well, junior hacksaw blade with a little masking tape wrapped round one end for an handle.
