I would welcome advice on with a smoking (blue) 2.5 L normally aspirated engine. Recently I had my local Land Rover trained mechanic change the timing belt and service my Landy whilst we were on hols.. For some reason he put 10W-40 semi-synthetic in engine. I had previously always used 10W-40 Mineral oil. When I went to collect blue smoke billowed from exhaust on start up but cleared once engine warm. Prior to service there was no problem at all. Future restarts with engine hot ....no smoke.
Timing was slightly retarded (chuffing) which has been put right. Some reduction of blue smoke. Engine now starts but not as well as previously. A bit like firing on 3 cylinders for a few seconds. Glow plugs are fine. We changed the oil back to 15W-40 mineral. Better. Once running engine is better than it ever was smooth, pulls well and quieter. New gasket had been put onto oil filler cap and we wondered if oil was being drawn into the inlet manifold on start up. By isolating the filler cap hose has not made any difference. I also now notice blue smoke with trailing throttle going down hill and on opening up. Valve stem seals or worn bores??? Ugh. Recon Engine has only done about 15000 miles since fitted in 2008 but that was done by LEGS for previous owner so no real idea how good the work was done.
So we are at a loss. It is a bit of a coincidence that valve stem seals or rings have failed coinciding with servicing and semi synthetic?
