hi all
been reading on a of for a while now, got a rr classic so it was only a matter of time till i ended up asking a question or two!:D
its a 89 tdi but has a more modern 300tdi engine, from a defender or disco? perhaps thats the same thing:confused:
started to smoke i suspected the turbo and on checking there is quite alot of play in the shaft and a little smoke from that general area in the engine bay as well as quite a lot out of the tail pipe,
here then is the point.... on looking underneath i noticed that there is a small pin hole in the downpipe and oil is dripping out of it while running would this confirm that the turbo is to blame or could it all be somewhere else, valve stem seals etc ??
any pointers much appreciated:)

thanks bmp42
it dose sometimes seem to clear up after running i guess this is because things heat up and tighten?
thanks again for the reply

if it smokes more on start up then it is the oil that has been standing in the head leaking past the valve stem seals - entering the bores and upon start up it then burns. have you tried running it and removing the oil filler cap to see if there is any pressure within the engine - points to piston rings then

i will try that can you tell me what i should feel "pressure" wise?
im also surprized that oil should be dripping down the inside of the down pipe at such a rate?

have you checked the turbo bearing !!

oops just read your post again
you should have very little movement of the turbo bearing

im guessing theres 1 maybe 2 mm of play it dose wiggle a bit?
oil wise its droped from full to half over about 3 or four trips maybe 70 miles or so?
after a while on a longer trip it dose seem to stop but it maybe just less and harder to see?
also it not massivly blue.. more grey

the engine sounds if its building back presure, and normal cause of this is worn piston/rings, and the only way forward would be to have a compression test.

thanks for the reply ..........and oh dear as is my usual luck ill take it in and they`ll tell me its all of the above ! :)

sounds like turbo to me, you will have a little play side to side in the shaft but should be none in and out at all if there is u need a newun

sounds like turbo to me too, my 95 300tdi disco was doing exactly same, oil down the front pipe new turbo sorted it tho.

i think it is turbo too mine was doing it and ended up runnin on its own engine oil nd blew a con rod through the block
