After finishing fitting the 12J motor in my 110 rebuild today I couldn’t resist trying to start it. Unfortunately, the starter gets very warm very quick, with a bit of smoke just for fun.

Are these starters feasible to rebuild, and is it worth it?
So far, all I know is that it’s a Lucas, but I see the price of a genuine LR one is over £700!!!!!!!!
 
The britpart ones are cheaply made, but seem to last okay.
I think the starter is the same as 200/300.

I would check all the cabling first before blaming the starter, try bypassing each cable in turn with a jump lead cable.

Yes you can strip the lr one and see what if anyhting is wrong with it, but be aware just because it works fine on the bench is not a guarantee it will work on the car.
 
Wai?? I never heard of them… wouldn’t I be better rebuilding the real LR one if possible?
Wai is a well known manufacturer that do predominantly make starter motors and alternators etc... I've had a few items made by them and never had an issue.
 
When it comes to parts do not be taken by the thought that if you pay seven times the price you will get something seven times better .
 
I’ve got a Wosp high torque starter for my Tdi. It was around £250. They likely do one for the 19J too.
