Bought myself a lovely looking disco for donoring to my 90 project.
It has apparently been using a bit of oil but I don't know how much as its not been used much of late.

It throws out a bit of smoke out the exhaust and when revved hard we have quite a bit of black smoke.

Out of the filler cap I get some white smoke - even pushing out around a closed cap.

If I leave it to run on tickover with the bonnet down to get some heat into the engine, I have found white smoke coming out into the cabin via the dash vents.

No oil in coolant / vise versa.

Dipstick tube doesn't blow out any oil etc.

Engine starts immediately every time and shuts off just as quickly when key turned off.

I've just gutted the car of all its interior. Timing belt changed and timing tweaked to get it bang on according to haynes procedure.

Had thought it was going to be ready for swap - but am now considering a full / partial rebuild before swapping it into the 90.

Preparing for an involved job here but not quite sure where to start. Have tools but no compression tester.

Any suggestions as to possible problems or solutions?

£170 and falling depending on how many more parts I sell from it.

Still has a good transfer box, axles, brakes, alloys and piles of new spares so cost isn't an issue.
So if it is to come apart - in the disco or out and on a stand?

you'll end up spending on tools what you could get a good 200 for, if you're considering a proper rebuild - plus you then have a good few 100 quid for new bearings, rings etc

cut your losses and get rid

first dibs on the dead engine, i'll collect the tranny and GB for Storm while i'm collecting the engine

Good man...but i have enough gearboxes atm tyvm :) Oh, and the rad and intercooler would be nice...i'll be done then.

Aah - but I like buying tools and I quite like the idea of doing a rebuild.
The project is more for a learning curve rather than building a cheap tdi conversion. Who's to say any other disco engine won't go the same way 6 months sown the line....

What do I need? I've seen the Turner-engineering article which looks very serious...... any other DIY guides about online?

Right..... why not just show me the snap-on version!
So a facom costs £450 odd new. And a 2nd hand sealey for a one-off job is what.... maybe £100.

Alternately - I'm sure a local mobile mechanic could happily do a roadside test to enable me to firstly ID the offending cylinder & then post check.

Next.....

might have been a wise move to get this local mechanic to look the engine over before you emptied your wallet on it

LR ops manual gives more than enough pointers if your serious about rebuilding, don't expect to do it for much less that £500 even using cheap/borrowed parts/tools

It was bought to fiddle with. If it is terminal then thats not the end of the world. If its fixable, even for +/- £500 then so be it.

Would have thought there would be more support for fixing things though......

So....its a no then for the tb etc?

Sorry fella, I'm not parting with it just yet..... I've got to kill it stone dead before scrapping. Right now it still sounds and drives too well - give me a week of spannering!

Turns out the interior smoke was nothing to do with the engine.
The blower fan was on its way out and starting to smoulder after 10mins or so eventually seizing & fusing itself together. Never even melted the fuse!
Dash & heater box now removed. Anyone need a heater matrix?

Buying a compression tester tomorrow for diagnosis.
