My td 4 was stood for a while whilst waiting for a new turbo vac hose. After fitting it seemed fine but suffered from no power, struggling to do 20mph. After a restart it seemed fine, then it happened again. After investigating I found d a mouse had got I to my air filter along with a bunch of leaves. Fitted a new one, cleaned egr and test drove again. It now smokes really bad with kangaroo juice for diesel. It ran fine before I had an hole in the vac hose. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Is it possible muck could have by passed the air filter and causing the problem?

Bloody rodents. They've attached all 4 of my cars this winter and a trailer full of boot sale stuff :(
You need to a diagnostic to find out what's up with the Freelander ;)

As you look at the air box (with the top off) the MAF is the bit on the left, bolted onto it. Should have a plastic gauze protecting the element inside.
You will see a connector in the top of the MAF, gently unplug it, it will be stiff. Then start your car. If it runs ok, the beastly mice have buggered it up and you'll need to replace it.

Yep i agree with that, the td4 will run with out the Maf (not efficiently ) but if the meesess chewed the signal cable before the connectors, taking the maf chip out will not help . . . .just my thoughts

If the Maf is removed the car runs on a default Maf setting, which allows you to drive the car until it's replaced
