Hello,

Firstly I've had a look around and read a couple of threads where it seems I've followed advice - cleaned EGR valve, replaced and checked filters etc.

Still got a problem in that my freelander just doesn't like to accelerate at all, and in fact will slow down when going uphill even if I'm in second gear.

Once the turbo kicks in at about 2.8k revs its fine. ish. Before I drag it to the local land rover garage to pay for getting it looked over I was hoping that someone here would be able to suggest a couple of possible easy fixes, things to replace or something.

So: Its a series 1 land rover TD4 GS (with the 2L BMW diesel engine.), about 2001 reg, has done 65,000 miles and my grandparents owned it and really looked after it from new. Fully serviced. I've recently cleaned the EGR valve which helped, and found that the fuel filter didn't have a properly working seal.

Any suggestions please?

Suggest you pop over to the introduce yourself section before somebody else comes along and bites your virtual head off.

Then do s search for MAF

depending on how mechanicly minded you are then the first thing to try is disconnect the maf sensor and see if it improves. its simple and free. it requires the plastic cover that allows access to the air filter removing then simply unplug the sensor to the left of the air filter. WORD OF WARNING THIS WILL CAUSE A FAULT CODE TO BE REGISTERED AND PROB THE MILL LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE.
as a by line people wonder why no mil light comes on with a faulty sensor. simple answere is it doesnt fail outside the peramiters for the mil light to illuminate but fails where the measured amount of air entering the engine is incorrect so the fuel air ratio goes well out of spec. if it fails where it doesnt register increase in air flow then the ecu doesnt increase the fuel input rate so lack of power. thats a simple form of explanation theres a little more to it but basically more air in more voltage out of the sensor. when you disconnect the sensor the ecu uses a set of default fixed figures in its own brain to run the engine.
 
one extra thing that gets overlooked is the seals on the inlet manifold, if they leak the engine draws in air bypassing the maf sensor so the engine fuels incorrctly. ive found them gummed into the retaining slots and not sealing. for those who change a maf sensor and dont get the improvement they expected then look there along with any possible leaks along the inlet tract. if you have accsses to a diagnostic gizmo that gives live data then it shows as a drop on the maf reading on throttle opening(you should see the same if you use the voltmeter method). and remember its before the turbo wakes up so the engine is sucking air and it will use the easiest route.

I also edited the original post, its a 2001 freelander, not a 2011 one. :)

Thanks lots, that worked - buying a new one to replace it next week.

Interestingly no warning lights are up.

Likely the turbo solenoid/valve? Also have to changed the air filter and turbo filter as they can make a huge difference
