One of the most contentious subjects on the RR forum is people who elect to convert from EAS to coils - it really does start some interesting "conversations".

Wondering what the views of SLS-equipped Disco owners is on this? Anyone here convinced that converting to coils was a good move? Anyone think SLS is the best thing since pan bread? Do SLS faults plague Discos anywhere as frequently as P38 EAS?

Just interested to hear views. When I pick up my Disco-2 next weekend, I will be very wary of another LR air suspension system and will be considering an after-market suspension kit (don't mention the insurance - have already checked that out).

Cheers

Hello Jock, I have two TD5's, one with and one without sls and I can tell you hand on heart that the sls equipped car gives a noticeably smoother ride and is better for towing.

Reliability of sls on a TD5 Disco - that only problem I have had in 20,000kms is the ride height sensors got frozen up in the deep snow we had. Once the snow relented all was good again.

The coils equipped car feels a little like our TDi 300 ie a little more primitive/rugged. Not bad, just not as good a road car as the SLS car.

Air suspension is only on the back of a TD5 Disco and is very straighforward to maintain. 95% of all problems relate to old airbags. They should be changed every 5 years or so and considored as service items. IF you do this, the compressor doesn't get over-worked and lasts the course as a result.

Good luck

Dave

I agree with the Biglad, I would,nt want a Disco without rear SLS !.
Apart from the ride quality, when the car gets loaded up for family trips,( 3 bikes on the back, roof box, food and kit ),the suspension is dead level.
Theres not that many components to the system, they just need looking after like anything else on the car.

I.m debating weather to change both my bags, ( 7 years/80,000 miles ), as I really dont want one to "pop" .

Hi Del, it is unlikely they will go pop, but they might let you down a long way from home.

I reckon they are better treated as service items along with ride height sensors - changed every 5 yrs or so, then you can be sure of reliability.

Good comments guys, thanks.

The height sensors do look too exposed to me, can't believe that LR didn't box them up better (well, actually I can totally believe it).

I am a bit air suspension paranoid after a nightmare with my P38, but the SLS seems a bit more straightforward. This motor's done 46k and it's clean, but the bags are a bit grey and speckled, so I reckon I'll change them for good measure.

Do you all use Britpart or Dunlop replacements, or is there a better aftermarket you'd recommend?

Hi Jock, the Dunlop one's are the items to go for, in part due to quality and in part due to the fact that they have push-in air pipe fittings making the swap-over job very simple and reliable.

Paddocks do them at £63+vat each and this includes the new fixing clips.
