The ZF 4 speed auto in my classic started slipping in 4th a few weeks ago and when i checked the oil it was brown and burnt:eek: so i thought id give it a change of oil. I went and bought some dextron 11 and began the oil change. As i was re filling i realised i didnt have enough oil, so went back to the factors to get some more. The only problem was, they didnt have any dextrom 11 left only dextron 111, the guy behind the counter said it would mix fine so i bought it and filled the gearbox up.

The problem now is that the slipping has got worse since the oil change!!!! Have i done more damage by mixing dextron 2 and 3 togeather? Or is it simply a well and truly buggered gearbox?

Also, is it the torque converter that would cause the slipping?

Thanks,
Stu

It's probably a buggered 'box.

You've not tuned the engine recently have you? If you repeatedly rev (say 3000 rpm) the engine with the gearbox in neutral it can fry the box very rapidly indeed.

Brown fluid means that there is a brake band in the gearbox that's fried.

.

Bloody hell:eek: il remember that !! I did rev it over quite a bit a while ago when tuning the lpg and now i come to think of it i remember smelling the same burning smell im getting now!!!!

Il dig my spare box out and have lots of fun fitting it(not!!) Its all part of the fun, or so i keep telling my self anyway:D

I've just had to fit a gearbox to mine for the same reason...

Top Tip - remove the transfer box first. I didn't, near killed me when what felt like 1/2 ton of gearbox finally came out.
