Hello all. Had my 2004 freelander td4 hse for about a month now and its been great so far. After some reading i am getting a little worried my IRD is bad. At very slow revs and speeds ie below 1.5k and 1st and second gear below 15mph just as you pull away and if you change gears into second at low revs their is a very faint grating or grinding noise. as soon as you accelerate or gather momentum it goes away and isnt their when slowing down. When you turn a corner you get it but only when its the same conditions as above. pulling away slowly or taking a corner after changing down to second and below 10ishmph.
It will happily turn full lock on idle in first and reverse but the noise is only their momentarily as you release clutch and it engages drive.
Its a manual if that makes a difference.
I read that checking the ird oil can show symtoms of failure, Is this an easy job to do on the driveway.

Do the one wheel up test to confirm the state of the VCU. If not sure how Google it.

Changing the IRD oil is reasonably easy, more space under the car the better as its in the middle of the vehicle. Always loosen the fill bolt BEFORE undoing the drain bolt as the fill bolt is made of cheese and can round easily. Always use a good fitting 6 sided socket.

Does it have 4 identical tyres, with the least worn on the rear?
Hi Nodge, they are identical sizes but not brand with the least worn on the rear yes. Im getting some General grabber at3s put on today. Their does look to be a slight weeping of oil from the ird area when i looked under today, need to order a syringe and a 6 sided socket for when i change the oil as ecp didnt have stock :( . The noise is very barely noticable but i think because im looking for it i hear it more.
Planning to do the one wheel up test also, service history does show a new vcu being fitted in the past.

I did have a look for geolanders as my brother is on the local coastguard team and their l200 has them and said they have been great but struggled to find any available locally and i was wanting some on sooner rather than later to avoid any more damage to the vcu etc. I will post an update once i get the oil changed in the ird, im hoping this noise is coming from elsewhere , could it be driveshafts or likely ird/vcu

That's sensible, but a few extra days wouldn't hurt, particularly if it's been used like this for some time.
If you're using 17" wheels, the 225/65/17 is a good size to use, and more common than the standard and rather small looking 55% profile. ;)

Darn, no vibrations and really only noticeable at very low speeds , it is happy to sit at idle in first and make full lock turns the noise appears as you first get going then stops even at idle it isnt constantly their. Annoyingly the noise began a few days after driving it home from purchase and a few days after my other vehicle a fiesta st the engine went bye bye. Hopefully it aint mega bills for the landy as this ford looks like its needing a top end rebuild :mad:. love cars...when they work
 
Maybe get all 4 wheels off ground with car on sturdy axel stands. Put it in gear and listen closely to IRD, Diff, etc while everything is spinning at low speed. You might find the noise that way ?

Ahh didnt think of that, good idea. The pal fitting tyres for me today works at the landrover/jg maindealer so may ask him to have a quick look see if anything has play when its off the ground or if the noise is their.
Pleasantly suprised by the activeness of this forum compared to some others i am on.

--- RE- IRD oil, checked in the shed today and the 6 sided sockets i have aint a full set. Any idea what size the level plug is ? Dont fancy rounding the bolt so going to get the correct sized 6 sided socket nice and new and hopefully avoid lots of swearing.
