Hi all
After my recent MoT failure on my 1992 110 200Tdi Defender I had to do some repairs. The MoT failures were just radial arm bushes and steering damper, which I've changed without any problems.
However, I had MoT warnings about wheel bearings and I also have noticed some noise when running at about 60mph.
So I decided to change the bearings after reading the workshop manual and deciding that it was within my scope. I've changed the bearings on the front left wheel that showed play, but the noise is still there and I've also got pull to the right and knobbly wear on the front tyres (both these were there prior to bearings change). There is also a slap when taking up drive again after changing gear, but this can be reduced by slipping the clutch a little more than usual.
Also, I did note that when I started to dismantle the hub I had thick black oil dribbling down the swivel ball which eventually stopped. The half shaft also inadvertantly got pushed inwards, but pulled back out again ok. Also, the half shaft could be turned by hand about and inch or so.
Basically, the whole thing feels wrong. It's arse is all over the road, needing constant movement of the steering wheel to keep it straight, the noise at 60mph, the tyre wear, and the drive slapping.
I want to do as much of an overhaul on both ends as far as axles are concerned. I've already done the suspension, brakes and UJ's in the last twelve months.
Any suggestions on how to proceed??
