Happy holidays!

Need a little skinny on a Jeep Liberty 4x4 V6.

I run a guide service in which I trailer a driftboat. The boat and trailer
weight about 600 pounds. I log about 8,000 miles on the road from April
through November.

I've been using a Dodge 2WD pickup truck with a V6 for the past eight years
and it's been fine. I need the V6 since I go up a lot of hills with the
trailer.

The only hitch with the truck and is that it's a squeeze to have three
adults in the front of the cab.

If anyone can be good points - and bad - about this SUV I'd like to hear
about it.

Looking at the numbers - it comes in at about 23k for V6 / Auto.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The Liberty is OK save for being a little girly, IMHO. I think you'd be
better off with a Cherokee Classic. It's got a little more oomph to get you
up those hills, plenty of space, and if it still has the 4.0 liter, it's a
tried and true motor. My 89 Cherokee with the 4.0 gets about 19mpg freeway.

If you look at the underbelly of the Liberty and compare to say a toyota
corolla and a cherokee you'll notice many similarities to the corolla, and
almost none to a cherokee.

Liberty is not such a great car - I regret getting mine. I am upside down
- depreciates FAST!!

And they replaced the Cherokee with this loser?

If your not stuck on Jeep you may want to look at the Nissan Xterra,
I've had one since new in 2000, I've just replaced the brakes at
91,000 kilometers but that's all I've done (except for new tires at
80,000K) I've never been stuck or had the vehicle fail to start.
Plenty of room nd lots of pulling power.

At Jeep Jambouree the liberty was one the impressed me the least, useless,
more SUV then off road vehicle.

19 mpg is nothing to brag about in what is really a small SUV. I can
get 19 MPG with my big old V8 powered 4x4 3 ton burb if I keep it at
65 on hiway and I have about twice the room too. A new burb will do
close to the same. THis is not an attempt to push him to a burb only
to say if you can live with 18 or 19 mpg you can get a lot more room
too. When my wife wanted a Cherokee in 2000, we had a hard time
finding one with a stick and a 4 banger (she basically drive it around
town/urban setting) All the dealers tried to sell her a 6 banger but
when pressed admitted the the MPG with the 6 is not very good for
vehical size. As it turn out, 5 years and 60k miles later she gets in
the low 20’s in town with A/C and it will do almost 30 MPG around 60
to 65 tops which is kinda nice for a beat around car in todays fuel
market. It has a good bit of pep too for its engine size and has
pulled a few trailer up to 2000 lbs or so localy with no real fuss and
1000 lbs or less is not real effort at all. (it is kinda a jack of all
trades when we can use it instead of the trucks) I do agree that the
liberty is a bit of a dispointment but you can blame that on Dalmer
not Chysler or Jeep. Dalmer has lost touch with what made a Jeep a
Jeep. They should have keep Cherokee and replace the grand cherokee
Euro style. If I had my ind on a liberty, it would be the diesel
powered one for sure.

Thanks for the informative reply. Just to be clear, I wasn't bragging
about 19mpg. I think the Cherokee is a great all-around vehicle, and am very
satisfied with mine. It's reliable, powerful, and compact enough to fit most
places. I've never heard of a suburban doing 30mpg, but there is a lot I
haven't heard of.

Never driven a landy, heard they are very nice and comfy. Not sure I would
dig getting the pretty interior all muddy when im out 4 wheeling, and a
little pricey for me.

I think that both of the above statements are precepts that arent
actually true, you can get a nice pre owned discovery. 4-5 years old,
that has been pampered for 16-20k. Or if you are like me and that still
seems steep, you can pick up a Disco 1, 1996-1999. for under 10k. As
for getting the inside dirty, well it cleans up nicely and despite some
of the ads, they were made to take a pretty severe beating. Might be
worth looking into, at least a test drive if you have a dealer near by.
oh, and they are easy to work on too, really straight forward design
and engineering.
