I want to change the sump gasket on the 200tdi while it's out. Rather than hang it from the crane and work on my back in the wet, I'd like to set it on the flywheel housing - i.e. vertically. The oil is drained and I'll take the studs out before resting it on a bit of carpet. Anyone done this? Any reasons not to?

I can't think of any reason why not except possibly maybe the valve caps might fall out.
Leave it on the crane though, for stability.

Valves would have to be well out of adjustment for caps to fall out but check anyway.
When I did mine I just rolled it onto its side on an old tire.

I didn't think they had a gasket - it's a special sealant I think. I need to do mine at some point. It's on a long list of jobs to do when I finally have a garage big enough for the beast.

Just had a look at the parts book - you're right. Large tube of instant gasket required.

Sounds like a plan, it's resting on an old rangie tyre at the mo. I'll do the tappets first.

You can get a cork gasket on ebay ! they are good I have one
