Hi, i have a defender 90 and ive just got a set of 4 new springs for it. However 2 are longer than the other 2. Does anyone no which is frnt and which i bk?? thanks

mite be a silly question, but y are the thicker ones at the back? when there is more weight on the front?? apart from towing.

OK.

As yours is a 90 then all the springs are the same diameter. 110's and 130's etc have larger diameter coils at the rear.

Ok you should have 2 rates i.e 2 springs with a higher Lbs/Inch for the rear of the 90. from memory Standard are 215Lbs inch and the fronts (diesel and Petrol except V8) are 170Lbs/inch. Roughly.

Once you have established the 2 different rates then the longer spring of the 2 goes on the drivers side. It is normal for a 90 and Series (leaf spring) to lean to the passengers side this is bacause the slightly longer springs are fitted to the drivers side to counter act the driver and fuel tank. Similar can be said for RR and Discos although some people shim them up level with plastic shims and they look awful leaning over when being driven. It could be that the springs that are longer are slightly longer mabe up to half an inch these could be the drivers fronts and rears but without any info of what kit you have we can not really help.

It may be that you have a "lift kit" this may come in many forms I will explain a few here.

Longer softer springs, Great offroad not good for weight carrying or towing. (I use these approx 3 inch taller springs that settle due to being softer to about a 2 inch lift)

Same length stiffer springs, good road handling not so good offroad.

Longer stiffer springs, could be argued better road handling, good for weight but not so good offroad.

What Kit do you have from that we can establish what you got. Jai

Cos you can carry a hell of alot of weight in the back of a 90. MAM 2900Kgs and the load area is over the back axle. Jai

I say back axle its between the axles and behind the rear axle if that makes sense you should always load the vehicle correctly la la la Etc. Jai

umm hav a kit frm paddocks. is a 2" lift kit. has brittpart springs (yes ino they are crap) ther are 2 longer thicker springs and 2 shorter thinner springs

Would you mind measuring them free standing? so we an get a comparison to standard?

15.19 inches tall 175Lbs/inch Drivers side front,
14.80 inches tall 175Lbs/inch Passengers side front,
15.31 Inches tall 225Lbs/inch Rear Drivers side,
14.80 inches tall 225Lbs/inch Rear Passengers Side,

Jai

will hav 2 check them 2mz as ive put the thinner two on the back :S which is lookin like a mistake :D so will hav 2 take them off

Well you could try them if you run empty then they may well indeed work for you. Best to ring up paddocks to get them to confirm tomorrow. Jai

I'm surprised they did not come with a Noddy guide.
Don't guess. Phone Paddocks and ask them. If they dont know then get your money back and get some from somebody who does.

yer i thnk i will. thnks for all ur help. much appreciated. would make sence if the stiff springs went on back i guess

i was at paddocks a few months back and the young lad infront of me was asking the same question,
and was told the longer ones go on the rear,
