Hi - does anyone else experience their SIII jumping out of gear on occasions - usually only in first or second gear if a a "bump" is experienced, often on a sharp change of incline? Is there anything I can do to prevent this (other than holding on to gear stick)? VMT for you suggestions

Sounds like your gear box

If you dont have much machanical experiance i would sugest changeing the box rather than reparing it. You should be able to pick one up seccond hand pritty cheap.

That's cos you got the Diesel one.

But on a more serious note it could also be engine / gearbox mounts.
Something may have come loose or got bent down there.
Does the handbrake come on when you go over bumps?
Of course it could be a worn gear box as Lazy landy said.

take the top cover orf yer box, the one where the gearstick goes and check the little springs are in place and not broken

Thanks all - the box was replaced onnly about 20,000 miles ago so shouldnt be too worn. I'll check the mounts and springs as suggested, and drive her more gently!

if you got an overdrive fitted check the nut which holds the overdrive unit clutch sleave on if its too loose it can cause the gearbox to jump out of gear on the over run

It will be the detent springs, easy enough to change with out taking the gearbox out, have you got a muppet annual? sorry I mean Haynes manual

They are positioned in the top cover, one under a plug on the top for 1st/2nd, one on each side for 3rd/4th & reverse. there are 2 L shaped brackets being held in place by 2 bolts each from the top, I think it's the left one for reverse detent spring & right for the 3rd/4th detent spring.
