The signal light flasher operates randomly on its own when the signal light
arm is in the off position. The lights don't actually flash, the flasher
just clicks. Is this an indication of a bad flasher or a wiring problem in
the steering column? The vehicle is a 2000 Jimmy.

You've an intermittently shorted wire between the flasher unit
and the column switch. Look for a mashed bit where the toe
of your boot hits the heap o' wires at the base of the column -
then move on the the wire at the switch itself - to see if it's
coming off or is rubbing on the steering shaft.

Thanks David. I couldn't find any wiring problems. After some internet
searchs I found this to be a common problem with some GM models. It is
caused by a short in the signal light multifunction swith in the steering
column. After reading this I found that a quick flick of the signal arm
makes it stop for a while. It's a $300 repair.
