Anyone seen this before defender steering box shaft sheared

Now that's a first for me too......

I am a Design Engineer, and modes of material failure are important to me in my design work (knowing how materials behave is quite fascinating to me) and I have to say, such a clean break is quite a phenomenon and impressive to see on such a large diameter rod without signs of elongation and necking...I know it is hardened but for a clean snap like that is unusual. I would be very keen to know 'how' that failed!
 
:rolleyes: Is it a NEW Anti theft device that owners of Defenders don't now they have fitted ? Until it thinks it's being nicked :eek::rolleyes:;)

Combination of heat treating and the machining process.
 
it just went ,,,landy does 300 miles between mot,s never off roaded but may have mounted a kerb or 2 ,,,but it dropped down to wedge against steering cross bar and ,,,,,didn't leak a drop ,,and yes it had steering fluid in ,,,lol

Gatso, could you please post a well focused big closeup of 1. the broken end and 2. what it broke away from, I know this will be up in the PAS box but if you could get a shot in there it would be quite helpful in trying to ascertain the mode of failure.
 
Material failure due to manufacturing fault. Or. the steel was knacked before the part was made. Same difference, you still walk home. :(
All without the aid of a made up degree,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,;)
