Hi , I went to test drive a 4.0 l hse 2002 plate petrol and while i was driving there was a smell of hot water , the kind you get when you open the radiator cap. It did go after a short while and the temperature gauge didn,t move past the middle and the fans were working o.k . Do you guys think this is something i should worry about ?

Did you think about looking under the bonnet, if you don't know what to look for, get the butler to do it?

Could just have been a damp heater matrix drying off as the system heated up, or leaking matrix. But as you said it didn't last long the latter is less likely.

Mine tends to be the same in damp weather  Did you check the state of the rad / cooling system? A poor / leaking cooling system in a V8 is a BAD thing!

yes I did look under the bonnet ( the butler had the morning off to polish the silver )there were no signs of fluid leaks .

There are two plastic drain pipes underneath the car either side of the gearbox which drains water from the aircon. I know they do block up.

Just a suggestion, if water does back up it may run onto the heater matrix.

Big job to replace ?

A bit fiddly, but if the screw comes out undamaged you are halfway there.
I managed to do mine without cutting the vent, but Stufers guide is a good one. As many have said, it seems a bit scary but when you are done you will wonder what the fuss is all about.
Big long good fitting phillips screwdriver is a must ;)

I think I have found the source of the smell .Running across the top of the engine is a pi
silver cylindrical object I think there is a cable attached to it , under this there are two pipes and where they attach to the object there appears to be a leaking gasket with what looks like coolant leaking out not pouring out just a small leak , I think this is falling onto the hot engine then evaporating causing the smell . hope that makes sense !
