I have a new(to me) V8 serp stripped out on an engine frame in my garage to replace the damaged liner one in my D1.
I know the history of this engine as I have purchased it from a friend but my question is do I leave the head gaskets alone as there are no overheating issues with this engine or should I replace them whilst the engine is out???

do them now and use the uprated type of gasket . it will take a third of the time a no hassle of recovery , being without the truck or , oh I wish i had done them when the engine was out .

If the engines out I'd be looking to do as much as possible cos it's much easier than doing it next time.

Having said that, you could always refit it, and then rebuild your knackered block - new cam etc and then fit that, and then sell/keep the standard motor.

If it ain't broke don't fix it does apply, but you know what them 3.9s are like!!
