Hi

I'm thinking of buying a Defender 110 12 seater Ex MOD LHD for when I go to france next year. Its a 68hp 2.5D n/a, Full length Roof Rack, 90kil, new doors, mint chassis/ bulk head, recon injector, new cam belt serviced MOT'd, all good tyres, two spares.

I have read some of the threads on this site about speed etc of various models, The speed doesn't really bother me as I will be using the landy on the farm for wooding and generally getting around the place, but will also I will aslo be using it to tow a 2 tonne trailer carting wood and materials around doing my real job (i'm a carpenter) so will be using it on road aswell. It will become the only vehicle the wife and I have (excluding motorbike):-

Will this landy be up to the job
Is £6,000 too much to pay 87 - 90 model
would I be better off buying a 200 or 300 TD1 and spending more money - which I don't have.......nause!!
your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds a bit pricey for a naturally asthmatic military 110. But it's hard to tell without seeing it. The TDI was a great improvement over the old 2.5 NA (No military 200 TDIs, they went straight onto the 300TDIs) but if you're happy to chug along with a long line of milk floats behind you then it's a fairly indestructible unit. Loads of room in the back - it's big enough to sleep in. Nice and easy to fix too. Not many 12-seater militarys about though; have the seats been added afterwards? Is it a hard top with windows (2 door) or a station wagon (4 door). Is it 24v or 12v?

the landy in question on web site www.defendercentre.com in the section under 90, 110 130's...........sorry no link available on site.

Its had the seats added I think he said, 2door with windows don't know the voltage - didn't ask

Hey up mikee.

Over the last few months I looked at quite a few 90's and 110's, generally speaking 110's are slightly cheaper than 90's. But ex MOD's and Water Board vehicles are more expensive than general run of the mill ones.

Try looking on auto trader website for price comparisons.

And buy on condition rather than age. Mines an '89 90 cost £1800 and has good bulkhead and chassis. Though won't be in anything like as good a condition as an ex MOD vehicle. I've seen them 5 or 6 years newer, with holes in the chassis big enough to put your fist through, going for 5 to 6 grand.

Having waffled on 6 grand seems a bit expensive, didn't look to see if that had VAT on top.

good look

Yep, ex-military LRs are usually sound coz the boys have to keep 'em running. The panels are often bad - coz they don't care if it looks ugly; they just wanna make sure it doesn't break down when running away from the bad guys. As I've said elsewhere though, avoid anything the Marines have had coz it's probably been driven through the sea a few hundred times :)

PS where's Sheddy? haven't heard from him lately...

OK I've had a look - it's a hardtop with windows. Lots of other non-military bits added too. Personally, I wouldn't buy it: if you want a military Rover then you don't want 12 seats, roof rack, civvy hard top etc. so why pay for 'em? If you want a station wagon then you really need a real one with 4 doors. It's a bit of a Heinz car this one. Keep looking!
