OK, I have been looking for a suitable vehicle to replace my Range Rover Classic V8, the brief being something more economical (diesel!), reliable, and capable of greenlaning here in the UK as well as trips offroad across the Pyrenees and down to Morocco, and a spot of light towing.

I have found this car, which I also have first refusal on subject to viewing: Land Rover : Land Rover 110 T/D Hardtop

It is a civilian car - was originally white all over, outside was sprayed green and the side lockers fitted at the same time I believe, but either way it is not an ex-MOD car.

Photo's I have been emailed of the chassis look good, but I will check it over very carefully, as with the bulkhead. Apparently the footwells were repaired by the current owner when he bought it 5 years ago. Anything in particular to check?

One thing that does concern me is the engine - it is the earlier 2.5TD engine, which I understand has a habit of exploding. Apparently most of the old MOT's are there to prove the mileage, but it has no service history and has been maintained by the current owner for the last 5 years. It has covered 133,000 miles (assuming it is the original engine) - is this OK? I know later 200/300 Tdi's will happily cover 250k+ but can the same be said for these earlier engines?

It's not a *lot* of money I know, but equally it could be if I am buying into a load of expensive repairs. Is it worth a punt at the advertised price given its age/mileage/condition?

Cheers!

Google 19j engine problems.
Apparently the later engines are meant to be okay but ive never really heard a good word said about them ever.

Although the price seems quite reasonable I'd ensure that there are no hidden costs, eg additional work needed on the chassis or doors?

Be prepared to swap out the 2.5TD for a 200/300 tdi (as per your other thread). No immediate rush, but at those miles I'd be thinking sooner rather than later.

Apart from that, the usual stuff applies. If the chassis and bulkhead are solid, I'd buy it. If either needs lots of work, I'd walk away. Photos unfortunately don't tell the condition of the bits that really matter - only a good prod with a screwdriver and hammer will tell you that!

As Ian says - too hard to tell from pictures, but if it stands up to a really detailed crawl over, drives OK and you're up for changing the engine at some point, seems a reasonable punt at the price

Hope it works out for you

I agree with the above threads but still barter him down a few quid and try to take some-one who knows their way around a 110 with you to inspect it.

Mine was virtualy the same. I had a good look over it and bought it! After all the bad words about the td *touch wood!* mine has been spot on, apart from it using abit of oil. It has done 140k now and seems fine! I am saving up for a 200tdi but mainly so I can get the tramsfer box from the disco. Not sure if the td would cope with the gearing!
When I bought mine I knew it'd be a project but circumstances made it a bargain! (he wanted my car!) worst thing I'm having to do is a couple of bulkhead patches, there are some small holes letting water into the cab.

For that price I'd say go for it, you may have to do some work but it will add to the value. I'd have a look, pick all the holes (literally!) you can find in it, and if it's not too bad, offer 2k. I wouldn't and didn't let the td put me off.

OK, thanks guys. How much do I need to budget for a 200Tdi engine swap? I've never swapped an engine before, but if it is relartively straightforward I'd be happy to give it a go - everyone needs to start somewhere!

Also, have done an MOT check online and this came up at one point - what does it mean? 110 4C???

Change of details

Make/Model:
LAND ROVER / 110 4C REG DT DIESEL recorded at time of test on 08/08/2007

engine £200+,£200 rad intercooler ,£70 exhaust down pipe conversion ebay, the rest time and bits like pas pipes, air pies ,wiring etc

£500 for the conversion is more realistic and, as you will have the time, try and locate a defender motor. Also source the bits in slow time at good prices.

the 2k included labour - that seems to be the going rate for a garage to do it. If you do it yoself it could be nothing  depends wot yu have to pay for.

I asked a shop on eBay and the will fit and supply a recon engine for 1500 or 1700 for a 300tdi. Do it your self tho, it seems easy enough!

Years ago I saw a video on here for a place (in the UK) that makes new landrover engines and fits them for you or delivers them for fitting at your leisure.
They were around the price that Mad Hat was saying, maybe a shade less...

Those recon engines on ebay are 995 plus you need the conversion kit and rad etc so you're looking at 1500 before he gets his hands dirty..

Alternative of course is the 'buy a donor disco' approach...if you're lucky and can sell a few bits and weigh rest in you can do job for 500
