I’ve got a set of four steel wolf wheels to go on my 90. They’re in reasonable condition although there is surface rust coming through. Before I fit the tyres from my existing rims, I’m contemplating refurbishing the new wheels. I’m thinking of shot-blasting the rims and repainting in white, which they are at the moment.

Has anyone done this and have any advice? I haven’t got a shot-blasting machine so will need to get one or hire one unless I can find someone local to do it.

Just had mine done. Look great in black. They were a real state before they went in. Shot blasting and powder coating is about £40 a wheel + vat.

I’m still open to other’s recommendations and suggestions.
 
Yeah get it done mate. Just had my standard wheels on my 90 done. 25 years of muck n rust gettin horsed around a farm and I had them blasted and painted in olde English white. They were in a rough state but the blasting did its trick. After they were painted they look new. £50 quid a wheel. Well worth it as they look very good. 👍

Powdercoating steel wheels is madness.

Alloy wheels are refinished with powder all the time, but the moment a steel wheel chips, the water will get in and start to rust and delaminate the powder.

The adhesion of paint is superior to powder, and, if need be, can be touched up also.



I've just repainted one of my 101s six stud wheels -

I put it in a caustic electrolysis tank for a while to remove rust and all the military paint.

...however, there was still bits of 2k primer in place, so I blasted it anyway! (My blasting cab is too small really so I was wanting to avoid this)

I then sprayed it with zinc rich epoxy primer, and 2k single stage top coat.

It will chip, as all wheels do eventually, but I'll be able to see the chips, spot repair them if I want, and the wheel won't gently rust out under the paint without me even knowing.


Powder is for indoor stuff, like hifi, cheap alloy diecast furniture from China, and cheap alloy wheel refinishing. Not external steel in a hostile environment.
 
Powder coating is fine on things if done properly, getting it done properly is the problem.
I would have them painted.
 
A friend made similar comments about powder coating on steel wheels after issues with his. Rather than take a chance on the quality of powder coating, I’ll probably go for paint. I’ll see if I can get the wheels shot-blasted locally and will probably paint them myself.
