Hi,

I've just purchased a 2003 (53) Range Rover L322. It's currently done 100k miles and last had a service at 90k miles a year ago. Obviously the engine oil and filter needs changing, but what grade of oil should I use and how frequently should I do this in the future? Also will the gearbox oil need to be changed at any point?

It is my intention to check all the brake linings, change the fuel filter, air filter. Is there anything else that I need to be checking/dealing with?

For a start, Is it a petrol or diesel ??

Obviously do all the normal servicing stuff like filters and oil.

You should also change the gearbox filter and oil (especially if you have a diesel) as they are prone to failing and a gearbox service will help keep it going

As if it hasn't had a new box yet it won't be far off from needing doing most probably.

I service my car every year and that includes doing the gearbox service too.

Also check condition of the air suspension struts as this is the time they usually give up at the age of yours. Unless they have already been changed?

Lastly get your self a thing called an " AllComms"

It will help you a lot when you get problems and it will soon pay for itself lol

Hi Mike,

No worries,

are you actually telling me you didnt know about all the problems range rovers experience ? especially the TD6 gearboxes that will fail lol ? :eek:

theres a lot of knowledge on the site, try searching for a bit of info and common problems with these cars :D

gearbox is easy to service once you know. i have made a post of it somewhere on here, ill find it for you.

regarding mileage, i only do around 8000 a year in my motor, but still service the same i would if i done double that :p

Put up on ramps in off road mode to give good access to underneath.

drain oil and remove sump pan.

inspect for much metal filings on magnet in sump (this will help you tell the condition of your gearbox)

remove old filter and make sure to remove rubber seal that gets stuck in the inlet

fit new filter in place

Fit sump pan back on with new gasket.

and fill back up with texe fluid.

had to design a way of filling up oil as clever old landrover decided to put the filler plug in the way of the prop shaft !!! :eek:

you like them yea ?? lol

i should buy my own set really.

but borrowed off a mate of mine, they are custom made. made for his mondeo hence them being slightly low thus not giving much extra lift for my motor.

thinking of getting a larger set made up for mine however.


although you can buy them on the net for around £250 i think :D just got to make sure they can take 2.5 tonnes of L322 lol

Thanks for your advice. I have now done the standard service and feel for peace of mind I want to do the gearbox oil and filter too. Looking at your pictures it all looks fairly straight forward, my only concerns are the procedure for refilling the oil. I understand the funnell and tube part of it but am not sure how I know when i've got enough oil in the gearbox? and whether I just pour the oil in in one go or if there is a set procedure to follow? Also, wheres the best place to source the oil, filter and gaskets from?

The filler plug is also the level plug, fill till it spills out....go for a quick drive - not to long as you'll need to open the filler plug again and top up so don't get it too hot....fill again till it spills out again and job done.

Hi Mike,

when you come to filling the gearbox back up with oil its a 2 person job really. someone needs to be under the car holding the hose in place and checking the fluid level and one needs to be pouring small amounts of oil down the hose.

regarding the oil level, there is no such level indicator, just basically fill up unto it drips out of the filler plug.

when you fill it up fully replace the filler plug and start the engine for a few seconds and put it in and out of all the gears including reverse a few times. this will get the oil round the gearbox. once you have done this, undo the filler plug once more and check to see if the oil is still flowing out the filler plug, if not... the oil has gone down, no problem, just add some more.

you can do the process for a second time to just be sure you have enough oil in there.

I got my filter and gasket together as a kit on ebay.

oil is best from here: Texaco Texamatic 7045e - Automotive Oils from Fleet Factors UK

get the 20 litre tub, much cheaper than landrovers £10 a litre !!!

and then you have enough to do another oil change in a few months to make sure you have totally flushed the old oil out.

Cracking photos there. How often should you change the gearbox oil on a 1995 2.5 DT (manual box)?
