My 200tdi is due for a service so I've been shopping around for the filters (oil, fuel and air) on http://www.land-rover-parts-shop.com and I see that genuine parts are a fair bit more expensive. Are Coopers parts any good or should I stick with the genuine parts? Any other recommendations for parts / where to buy?

Also there seems to be a load of oil down the side of the engine and my oil level has dropped noticably over the last 6 weeks (about 1/3 distance between min and max on dipstick). Could oil be leaking out of the head gasket or would that be a lot more obvious if it was fooked? I've cleaned a lot of it off so I will see if it comes back. I haven't had the beast very long.

Which side and how high up the engine is the oil coming from?
As regards filters and oils that's personal preference and budget, I use OE or genuine parts unless their is a performance gain by using aftermarket, but then mine's a work vehicle and used hard.

oil is on left side as you look from the front of the car. Can't really describe the height but I'll take a picture tonight and post it.

I think I'll get the genuine parts, no point in risking buying crap for the sake of 20 quid.

coopers are a well known and respected brand. there are other good brands of course. there are also some which shouldnt even be allowed to sell in the uk.

highly unlikely that lr make their own filters. someone like AP etc.. will make as oem.
i would have no trouble using filters from AP/coopers/fram/crossland etc...

fram filters are the same as o/e they are made for landrover under licence by fram on the outskirts of burton on trent. i know this for a fact as i loaded a lorry for export there about 6 months ago. coopers also make filters for main dealers so it doesnt matter which one you buy. i personally would buy a coopers or a fram and save however much by not having it in a landrover box ;)

I'll get the coopers parts then since people know they're good. They're a fair bit cheaper than the "genuine" ones.

There should be a picture attached showing my oil problem. Any ideas?

Cheers.

Sure its not diesel from one of the bleed off / return pipes?
looks too light to be oil.

You are allowed to clean the crap off so that you can see properly - the blokes in here won't think that your a pansy for cleaning an engine

The crap was the point of the picture! My next plan is to clean it off as you say and see if it comes back although it's good to know that I can do that and not have you guys think less of me. :p
It thought it odd that all the oily crap was only at one end of the engine - if this has leaked out of the engine where's the most likely place it's come from given the position of the gunk?

:D probably halfords :D
Best guess [lacking X ray vision :p ] Rocker cover gasket.
Second guess crankcase breather cyclone or breather pipes [little black pot in front of oily gunk with braided pipes on it]. The cyclone is supposed to be cleaned during 12k service

The rocker cover gasket is meant to be changed on the 12k service too as you need to check the valve clearences.
