when engaging 4wd after engaging hubs pull away in 1st then into 2nd? or go straight into 2nd? someone said not to change gear[?]
also,on road struggles with hills in devon, quite often need to be in 1st to get up there....its a series3 swb....has anyone else found this?

if you engage 4wd as long as your not on hard surface like the road ,you can change gear or use any you want the same as 2wd,they do struggle with hills but for 1st it would need to be steep

sounds like its wanting a real good service for a start or looking at why its got no power, cant be too much worse than cumbrian hills and the 2.25 derv seems to cope ok here

Is this hills on the main road, or on twisty lanes? They are underpowered but shouldn't need first unless you are slowed right down.
Like evil says, tappets, fuel filter, air filter, oilchange may up the power output slightly.

Green good, as said give it a good look over and full service, wont make it win races but all helps and is preventative action too.

Intermittent loss of power?
Petrol or diesel?
Crap in the fuel system?
Collapsing air hose from filter?
When was it last serviced?

I think a petrol 2.25 in good fettle should be able to hold 25mph on anything but a very steep hill. A diesel is another matter though, I'd think 15/20 on a long hill. My 2.5 N/A90 can hold 30 on the Glenshane pass, and that's a fairly steep mile long hill.
As above, a good service can make a big difference, if it's petrol, I'd check/change the points too.
My old 2.25p with uprated head and electronic ignition was good for 65 on the flat, and 40 on most hills. They can be a realistic daily driver, if you can stand the fuel bill.
