Hi there,
I have a series III with a Dihatsu diesel engine fitted. Does anyone know if it is possible to fit the Dihatsu gear box to the vehicle as Series gearbox is giving bother and I still have access to donor vehicle.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

Thanks
David:(

Dave,

Cant really help you on this, but am facing the same decision myself, I have a daihatsu 2.8 TD lump and the 5 speed box sitting on my drive as we speak, the 2.8 will be going in with an adaptor plate to the Series box, but was wondering if the Daihatsu box would fit.

Not done any measuring, but main prob that I can see is the Series handbrake, the back plate mounts onto a series box with the drum on the prop, either a new backplate would have to be made, or some sort or Rover backplates made to fit the rear axle via cable??

Did you fit the engine yourself? If so do you have any advice, hints etc, any problems you had to overcome?

Hi there,

Yes we fitted the Dihatsu engine with the help of the adaptor plate and exhaust fittings. Had to make up a trottle linkage . That was the mains problem. All works fine. The voltage regulator for alternator has to be isolated from the body of the vehicle so we mounted it on a timber base.

All teh wireing diagrams came with kit as did engine mounts, exhaust adpator and plate for gearbox.

Will have to re-think the gear box / Hand brake end of things.

Mind if I ask where you bought the adaptor plate etc from. Also did it come with the bush that sits in the end of the engine where the gear box splie fits?

Am going to fit the series Alternator so hopefully wiring changes will be kept to a minimum.

if fitting a series alt no wiring change will be required
with regard to daihatsu g box if it was an easy fit they would put the whole power unit in intead of messing about with adapter plates etc HTSH
