I bought the Halogen upgrade kit from Paddocks with the Xenon type bulbs. Pretty cheap, easy to fit straight swap and now I can see where I'm going in the dark.

Yeah even the defender lights are an improvement. I have the "Crystal" ones and they are quite good. Poor wiring doesn't help in some cases.
either go for uprated bulbs (brighter - not higher wattage) or sealed beam units.

Are the sealed beam units not the standard old ones?
A row of spots along the top of the roof line works quite well - or just 2 extra spots at the front - though if you forget to use the dip switch when cars approach you tend to get flashed a lot - unless the other person has their fog lights on when its not foggy. Then its obligatory to put every light possible on to blind them.
