I have a few questions about a series II which i am looking at buying.

was the series II discontinued once the series IIa was introduced? or was it still produced until series III came in?

How do i decode a chassis/ serial number?

the IIa replaced the II.
The chassis no will identify the model, but not the year.

so am i right in thinking that if it is 1968 model it can only be a series IIa? as the series IIa were produced from 1961 onwards

Yes, and it looks like a IIA, the chassis plate should confirm it.
