Any ideas about the Water Temp Gauge on a Series 3?

Bought car a few weeks back, (pictured under olive drab-V Nive!) just finishing the wiring. Finished the Temp gauge, so positive goes from the engine block, to positive on the gauge, and negative on both go to earth (vehicle is neg earth)

But after about 10mins running the gauge works its way up, and then sits right at the top of the hot section of the gauge.Although the engine itselft isnt hot, and appears to be running perfectly.

Any Ideas?
