So until last week my Land Rover fired up and ran beautifully. However I then ran out of petrol, it is an old petrol tank and suspect rust / dirt being sucked into the fuel lines. Now the engine struggles to start and just keeps turning over. Sometimes after about 5 turns it starts up but will stall immediately without giving it throttle.

The inline petrol filter is now full and only has a little dribble of fuel in it, the carb also appears to have a small amount of petrol leakage.

Any ideas of what has gone wrong and how I could go about fixing it?

surely if you changed the filter before you ran out of petrol its likely got clogged when you ran out?

Does lift pump get petrol to carb? if it does the small bits of rust may have blocked jets.

Start with the changing the filter again. What sort of carb is it? Put lots of fresh fuel in and check your fuel pump is working as advised

Have you been giving it some choke when it fires up? Its started getting colder. Best seems to be to give it little or no choke until it fires (to avoid flooding) then as soon as it catches give it a little (unless its very cold in which case a lot).

I'm assuming you've checked for spark? Is there fuel getting to the carb when the engine turns over - pop the fuel line off the carb and see. No? Change the fuel filter, clean out the sediment bowl and filter in the pump and clean out the filter at the bottom of the lift tube in the fuel tank. Yes? Then strip the carb and clean out the float bowl and jets. Reassemble with a new gasket kit. If it's leaking find out where - some carbs warp, there's plenty of threads on here about fixing this.

UPDATE: Got a friend of mine who is a mechanic and once owned a series 3. He had a look at it and concluded (something along these lines*) that there must have been dirt stuck in the outward valve in the fuel lift pump. He disconnected a single pipe, blew into it, put the pipe back on and after a few turns over the fuel filter filled and she roared back to life. I'm still a bit baffled as to what went wrong as he is a quiet fella and after muttering '' there you are fella'' he got in his van and was off again.

Simple enough,rubbish at the bottom of tank blocked the fuel feed line somewhere,most likely at the pick up in tank or as he said the lift pump.When he blew down the line the crap went back into tank so a drain out may be a good idea next time tank is low.
