Hello all,

Im currently replacing all my series bushes due to various 'clunks' etc when driving. So far i've removed the spring bushes which were relatively easy (with Bushwacka). Ive stopped at the rear chassis bush as the first one is a challenge. Im replacing all with Flo Flex so i don't encounter this again; i've removed the inner steel tube and rubber but looking at the original bushes that came out of the springs these look to big to go into the chassis bush hole! I thought they were all the same?. The actual hole looks to small and i only noticed this as the Bushwacka shim that fitted the rear springs didn't fit the chassis bush!

Im now on the hacksaw and tap out drama that will take hours but wondering if anyone has ever encountered this or knows of a quicker solution? Im thinking that if i grind a small amount off the front of each rear hanger hole the actual size should be seen? There seems to be a small lip all around the hole as i've started to remove the outer bush steel casing!

Any help greatly appreciated.

In the old days, (not long ago) folks used to burn em out with a blow lamp. I'm not sure I'd fancy doing it that way though, it would stink the place out.

I wouldn't go grinding the hole, there is a weld between the tube and chassis and you could weaken it. I think its a bundle of new hacksaw blades and a pad saw handle, then get under the edge and chisle.
 
thanks for the replies - update, managed to get the inner out using the advice on here. Plenty of hacksaw blades and patience

You’re at the tedious bash bash stage. Use heat and try to get a lip of the outer metal lifted and bash away at it. Don’t matter if it peels but use lots of WD40 and heat. It usually slips out once you’re one third through. It’s a total bastard of a job, especially if you’re outside and on the ground.

Yes the rear shackles are different but can’t remember the parts numbers for now.
 
Oh and also recommend a careful ream of the hole before you drive the new bush. The holes can get ovaled over time . A 32 mm reamer used once in and out quickly and carefully does the job.
 
Update - all done :), still have to settle the springs then tighten all the bolts but as you stated the chassis bushes were painful. I borrowed a Bushwacka from a mate and it was fantastic. Only had to cut 2 of the chassis bushes out. But two cuts about 10mm apart on the outer sleeve then heat and WD40 which made the 10mm piece peel out followed by the whole bush.

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm the front rear spring hangers right way round. I know the threaded side goes at the rear but does the shackle with the big extended piece go at the bottom or top? Likewise the outer shackle with the slightly less protrusion? I think they go opposite each other with the large rear shackle at the bottom which takes the spring bolt and the outer at the top for the chassis both.

All sorted (thanks internet) my last question is do you torque up the bolts in the shackle then add the bolt to secure?

Well done. As already said a dirty but simple job made difficult if you’re at ground level. Having to do my rears again, not looking forward to it.
 
John to be honest it wasn't that bad. Just took my time. But you're right i wouldn't want to do it again :)
