Taking children to see Santa tomorrow and have major issues with Land Rover so need some advice in order to save the day please.

Land rover series 3 2.25l was running low on engine oil (light came on when breaking) so I topped it up , at same time topped up coolant ,(both in relevant fillers , no mistakes there). no issues so far.

Now just after this I have three issues , engine is running very hot and goes into red after about 1 mile , car is shuddering and possibly unrelated however amazingly coincidental there is a loud banging noise from under gearbox when excelerating and the gearstick is shuddering , gear changes are smooth and gearbox does what it should does but make a hell of a noise on acceleration , any ideas would be gratefully received , sureley oil top up couldnt have caused all these issues , ive been doing low level car manitenance for over 20 years.

Thanks

Hmmmm should never let oil level fall so low that the red warning light comes on! The topping up of fluids cannot possibly have the effects you have mentioned!

how much did it take to top oil up?,and check the prop shaft ujs

hi, is engine running in neutral ok ,thought is if it is then engines ok and sounds like a gearbox issue, when did you top up gear box, secondly has the red light come on to late when damage is done and engine partly siezed up or damaged

Cant imagine engine is damaged as was running fine until topped up and now its worse , runs just as rough in neutral , in morning I'll look underneath and also see if bleeding radiator helps just can't understand why it has all gone wrong over one afternoon

1ltr loss wouldn't cause the red light to come on! Could be worn bearings or pump faulty causing low oil pressure?

it was the point red light came on that im thinking damage was done ..as when light came on you would have stopped asap..so it may have been running ok to that point

Just checked plugs , two nearest to bulkhead were great , other two covered in black powder , cleaned them off but still no change

Just a thought: Are there any ticking noises when you depress the clutch with the engine running? Does the clutch pedal have any feel of pulsing when you change gear?

Is your dipstick tube secure they have been known to come loose and if raised it is possible to overfill the oil .

Won't start at all now ! Dont suppose any of this could be starter motor related ? Checked propshaft , all seems in good condition

if two cylinders are not firing it wont start the 2 black plugs are showing that, compression test the 2 cylinders i think its not good news sorry to say

Beware of the bell on the dipstick coming loose and sliding up,this results in the dipstick reading right even when there is little oil in the sump Once bought a motor that the previous owner was getting rid of because oil light kept flickering when going down hill, intending to rebuild it only to find the stick problem.Put the right amount of oil in and it ran fine but did change the shells in case before putting it in my landy.
