Hi,
Just bought my first landy, first issue is oil leaking from the hub cap.
Have opened it up for a better look, and couldn't see what stops the axle from sliding in and out against the hub cap.
I think it's a Salisbury diff, and there's no useful diagram in the haynes manual, but I think the circlip is in there wrong. This pic shows how I found it, there is a mark where the circlip was, it was basically around the outside of the axle shaft, stopping the shaft from sliding into the drive flange:

Should this be an inner circlip inside the drive flange, holding the shaft against the diff, and not allowing it to slide out towards the hub cap?

Then I'm confused with the oil seals and where the oil should be, I think there should be an oil seal between the axle casing and "rear hub bearing sleeve"? This stops the axle oil from getting into the bearings and out to the hub, right? Or should the oil be swilling around in the hub cap as well (the o ring was buggered where the hub cap meets the drive flange)?
Should there be a gasket between the drive flange and the hub assembly (there wasn't one)?
Should there be an oil seal at the end of the shaft (again, none there)?

Lastly, is anyone able to confirm the parts I need?:
- hub cap: hub-cap
- o ring (between hub cap/drive flange), specs/link?
- circlip, specs/link?
- gasket for drive flange: gasket-drive-member-hub
- lock washer: wheel-bearing-lock-washer
- oil seal for inner bearing: hub-oil-seal-to-80-81
- oil seal for rear hub bearing sleeve: axle-case-oil-seal-to-80-81
- gasket for bearing sleeve: gasket-stub-axle-to-axle
- gear oil: millers-trx-75w90-semi-synthetic-oil-5-litres

Any help appreciated, sorry for newbie questions.
Cheers, Si.

circlip sits on out side of drive member, shaft shouldnt pull all the way through drive member there is only hub seal as oil seal wheel bearings run in axle oil, fronts have seal because of swivel housing gasket stub to axle 500978,drive member gasket 231505,lock washer 217353,basic ep 90

Thanks for setting me straight. looking at the diagrams and your description James, it seems it is all correct, and just needs cleaning up and the o ring replacing. I've ordered the gaskets and oil seals and new oil.

forgive me for one more dumb question, should the bearings not be greased then if they're running in the axle oil?

Cheers.

Can of worms time - there's lots of discussion about greasing bearings, possibly 'cos the fronts have extra oil seals on some later models. The book says pack with grease so I always do....
