I've just pulled the head off my 1973 series 3 due to having water/oil mix and losing coolant. I've had the head crack tested and skimmed and it's ready to go back on. Can anyone help me with the bolt torque and tightening sequence (and whether I redo after 500 miles or not!). I've managed without a Haynes manual so far and am reluctant to buy one now!!!

head bolts as follows
5/15in unf 18lbs per ft or 24 nm

1/2in unf 90lbs per ft or125 nm

o16 o12 o10 o6 o2 o4 o8 o14 o18

o15 o9 o1 o7 o17

o11 o3 o5 o16

imagine thats your cylender head the o before the number is the bolt hope this helps, regards j

Thanks for the help. What's the 5/15? Is that the thermostat housing?125nM isn't very high I would have expected it to be closer to 200. Maybe that's why they leak!!

Do I need to retorque after a few miles?

nothing in the haynes bible saying the bolts have to be re done, but i would recheck them after a short while say 100 miles just to be sure, only time i use a torque bar is when im doing alloy heads, and ive never had any come backs yet, i did make a little mistake on the sequence i sent you i think i missed bolt 13 out, aman with your expert knowledge would have it sussed good luck regards j
