Hi

Probably an easy one for some of you. I recently bought this landy in US. (exiled Brit). Main gear box seems to be OK. Hi/lo works OK. The problem is that in either hi or lo there is no 4 wheel drive. Shafts are all there, hubs are locked. Whats the problem??

Also, the yellow knob effectively raises the 4 wheel drive pin. This just moves freely up and down and doesn't seem to do anything whether in hi or lo.

Any guidance much appreciated.

Ok. Problem is not with the box. I took it onto some snow with the floor removed to see what was going on. The front shaft is rotating when it should.

How can I check that the diff is bad?

Only one of the rear wheels spins. Neither of the front 2 do...........and it wont get out of an inch of snow!!!!!

are you sure your hubs are locked?? jack up one front wheel put the g/boxes into 4wd and any gear then try and turn the wheel you have jacked up and make sure your hand brake is on

OK

Got it back into the garage. As suggested, jacked it up in 4 wheel, in gear. Wen I did the left wheel (as you look at front) it went round. I assume it shouldn't! When I jacked up the other side it didnt go round but it may just be stiff brakes. I took off the left fwh to make sure it was on lock and it was. Whats next ? (slob)

thanks

Go and have a smoke then get on wheresdildo bit and take the **** out of the septics.

Hi,

I've just come on here to post the exact same problem with my series 3. Took it off roading yesterday in a quarry for the first time and it wouldn't get up anything more than a mild incline without the back wheels spinning. Didn't seem to be any power to the front whatsoever. Was very frustrating and slightly worrying when caught in a bog, fortunately mate's discovery dragged me out (it's bloody amazing where those Disco's can go, he had the fecking thing almost vertical). Anyway he suggested that it could be a broken front half shaft which are supposed to be common...i don't know a great deal about series models yet (have only owned mine about 3 months and am learning fast) however, i would have thought that if a shaft was broken that you would hear some sort of grinding or unusual noises or something...? Both front hubs were locked as well so that wasn't the problem unless they are defective. Anyway - i've got it booked in for a service at the beginning of Jan with a bloke who owned it for 15yrs before me so i expect i will have some answers then which i will post ASAP unless anyone here has any other ideas?? Anyway to top off my day, the back box fell off on the way home so it now sounds like something off scrapheap challenge!! Keep posted, cheers - Rob.

i've had back half shafts break' dozens of them ' but never heard of a front one breaking.

hi, wen i ad my lady it was tood 4 5 yrs, as urs tood 4 anytime wid out movin, mine worked fine, if it ana stood, i thinks dare sumata rong in da gearbox, but ask agen, coz i cud b rong, but da land ive got it was stood in a field 4 5 yrs and we drove it ome, it was k, ya problem confuses me, unless dares an acurual problem wid da parts in da gear box, i mite not b rong , but just tellin ya my experience

My box exploded!!!!!!!

Running rough at idle so I decided to tune it!!!! Took it down the road and thought I'd blown the engine. It blew the box open. Still need to get that (where from in the States I don't know!!)

I think mine must be half shaft but wouldn't one of the front wheels work???

yer box exploded?? i dream of that happening. but if one of yer shafts is shafted then cos of yer actual diff the wheel with the good shaft wont get any drive to it! you need to go to ask jeeves and type in 'diff works' and see what you get

Hi,

Finally got to the problem with the four wheel drive problem on series 3. The passenger side freewheeling hub was furked. Even in lock position - was still freewheeling - took it off and looked inside was full of rust and mangled bits of metal! So needs replacing - but with standard hubs this time.

If you check them on your own car and they are the same as mine... There are 6 big bolts on the hub, take these out and pull the hub away - it should come away from the wheel by about 1cm and be able to turn easily when free. If it's buggered it'll still be able to turn easily when locked - unless it's the hub on the other side which is buggered in which case it will turn when locked but you'll be able to feel the resistance caused by the shaft turning as well. If you want to look inside the hub, you'll see 6 small allen bolts (imperial measurement) remove these and pull the locking mechanism off, you may lose a little oil here, not more than half a teacup. When you turn the locking mechanism, you should see it screwing in and out. If it doesn't, its buggered.

Rob.

how many splines do yer shafts have? i might have a couple of drive flanges you can have for the price of the postage.

Hi Slob,

A mate of mine has already sorted me out a couple already, but thanks very much for the offer all the same. Hopefully to be fitted this week.

Will keep posted on progress, cheers.

Rob
