hi guys
my name is shayne and i have just joined having bought a series 3 landrover, i have looked on before and seen that there is some very knowledgeable people on here so i'm hoping for some help lol
its been a while but for some daft reason i have decided to try my hand again, i had delivered yesterday a series 3 1974 2.25 diesel, wasn't running but i thought ahhhh it'll be nowt HAHA, so i set to it this morning, before i go on before i got it the previous owner put a recon head, injectors and new glow plugs in, anyway it wouldnt start so i put a gallon of diesel in and bled all the fuel, replaced the oil bath with fresh oil, and still wouldnt go, so tried a bit of easy start and it ran for 30 seconds and conked out, it was trying to start but puffing out blueish smoke, tried re-bleeding all injectors on top and tried starting over and over again, as i left it tonight it is practically starting but just won't but is now kicking a bit of black smoke and oil out of the exhaust and i'm stuck already lol, i've read about injector pump timimg and alsorts but i'm not that knowledgable and from last time i was on here i know there is some very clued up people so any suggestions would be very good

cheers in advance

I think your first step is to give the engine a service and check the work of the PO. It could be a combination of poor adjustments or a particular fault. Check valve clearances, replace/check fuel and air filters, is oil in good condition, sedimentor clean? Are the battery and alternator in good health? It is possible the PO didn’t fix the original fault so you may end up checking timing belt, is the injection pump gummed up, is the head back on properly, are the crush washers correctly installed under the injectors?

My approach is broad, others may have a better idea.

Morning after a look this morning I’ve now worked out that the glow plugs are wired up incorrectly, and also bypassed ballast and not grounded to block off last plug, I’ve attached a picture to show wires coming in as not sure which ones should go on ballast and which side, the rest of it I’ve got worked out
Cheers

bleed the injector pump screw on top
I’ve bled the 2 on the side didn’t even see one on the top, wasn’t sure if it was a general timing or pump timing issue although still seems fuel related, it starts ticks over for 5/10 seconds and cuts out , doing my head in lol

No problem scroll down forum list till you get to series and post there...there's lots of other topics that you can join in on as well.
