Anyone know whether the petrol sender unit should have an earth attachment?

Guage is not working but when sender end of wire is earthed it goes up so I suspect the sender unit, which is a wire clipped jobbie. There looks to be the corroded remains of another spade as well as the main one? If it does need earthed I can take out the sender unit and solder on a new earthing spade............just thought I'd pick someone's brains first!:)

Yes it needs earthing. yes you can take the sender out If it's out like the one on early 110's it's a bayonet fitment

Not on the one I fitted to me 110 theres a rubber seal between the tank and the sender so that probably buggers the earth.

get a photo of it if its the same as mine it has two wires going to the front of the vehicle and an earth strap

It is not unusual to find petrol Land Rovers have diesel sender units fitted, they will have an extra spade connector to work the low fuel light, not fitted to petrols. Just ignore it.

the fuel level sendor on my 81 S3 definatly has an earth wire, it earths on to the bottom of the seat box.
