Hi about to start a Series 2 build, just thinking whether I can just slap in a series 3 gearbox (with syncros in all gears) on it instead of the standard series 2 gearbox. Or is there some level of modification required to make it all work together?

Cheers.

I would suggest using nuts and spanners to install the gearbox rather than trying to slap it.

Even a gearbox doesn't like that sort of treatment. :)

I thought the same thing when i got my 2a. I just got used to a non-synchro gearbox.

Unless it's due to yours not having a gearbox at all?

OK, second as well. It is about 17 years since I had a 2a.
I don't remember the lack of synchro being any hardship to drive, though.
Oh i totally agree. After a short while you get used to downshifts and matching the engine/gearbox speed. It's daunting at first when you have gone from driving a 1.2L petrol ****box from 17-23 but you get it pretty quickly.

you either fit the pipe work and slave cylinder from a series 3 and remove the earlier type or swap the bell housing on a 3 box to that of a 2a,suffix e 2a boxes were full synchro too

E? So before F or am i getting confused on old plates. Mine isn't synchro and is suffix F as well as never having had the headlamps on the radiator panel only ever on wings, someone on here said it still had genuine military wings of the year. So i'm all confused about mine. Even says 1968 on the nice little bronze plate thingy down by the transfer lever.

Don't want to hijack the thread, just confused.

How long have you been driving? You're 17, passed yet?

I don't think you'll have any problem as long as you practice and take it slow. You'll get it quick.

Been driving for 3 months, just odd bits and experience before I go for my test. A bit off topic looked at getting insured on it and for some reason they wouldn't insure me until I was 18. I think that was with Classic Line, any recommendations?

So you’re saying that a 1968 2a should have full synchro..?

I’m with admiral and I got the discount despite the high mileage I put on for the year (very hopeful. Done less than a tenth of that) and not being garaged.

You could try Adrian Flux, but they tend to be quite expensive. Or Google Academy Insurance in Egham, Surrey, and give them a ring.

Are you and Will getting confused with registration letters? Gearbox suffixes are nothing to do with reg letters. When Land Rover improved a gearbox they gave it a different suffix letter after the gearbox number stamped on the 'box itself.
Nothing to do with registration letters: 'E' 1967, 'G' 1968 etc...
