Actually.......the process of burning/combustion and rusting are both oxidisation, so from a chemistry point of view rusting is the same end result as combustion.

Fe (iron) + O2 = rust

(any)HC + O2 = H20 and CO2

Interestingly both are exothermic reaction and give off excess energy in the form of heat.
