Hi All

Long time reader, first time posting.
My 97 DSE is starting to show some of the faults that seems all to common on this model.
Most annoying though is the hot starting fault, 10-15 sec of crank before it fires when warm, and somtimes even cranking to the point where the battery runs out of amps.
So now i want to try and change the two sensors (injector nr.4 coolant sensor and the fuel temp sensor) that seems to be the cause of the problem.
However i have no clue what parts to order from bosch so any pointers to part numbers or description would be greatly appreciated, and of course a big help.

injector no4 is a needle lift sensor, if this was faulty you'd have bad starting all the time (hot or cold)

main thing to have checked for bad starting is the fuel delivery rate, its common for the pump in the tank to get tired and although still work, its not pumping enough.

Injection timing often goes out as the miles get racked up and the engine wears, this is controlled electronically by the ecu and can be adjusted with the engine running and connected to T4

If it starts better with the coolant temp sensor unplugged then the compressions need to be checked, to check this, unplug the coolant temp sensor (green plug under the inlet manifold) the glow plug light will operate even when the engine is hot, wait for the light to go off and see how long it takes to start, if its a manual you can leave it like this but auto will come up with "gearbox fault" on dash

try all that and see how you get on
 
The sensor is below injector no 4 and not on injector no 4 unlike the previous quote says.
It is a engine coolant sensor and it cost about 12 quid from landrover.
I have the part no at home but i am at work on nights and wont be able to get it untill the afternoon.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE THAT IT IS THE SENSOR THEN THE EASIEST WAY OF TESTING IF IT IS FAULTY IS TO JUST DISCONNECT IT AND LEAVE THE CABLE HANGING LOOSE AS THIS WILL NOT EFECT ANYTHING.
Trust me on this as i have done it and it worked for me.
I had the hot start problem and i changed literally every thing on the fuel system before i started to unplug sensors.

I have tried ( and failed ) to reach the green sensor by hand. any hints as to how to unplug it ?
Furthermore when the sensor is unplugged, the computer is tricked to trigger the glowplugs, as described by Clutchdust, and then the engine will start anyway.
So how is it possible to tell if the sensor is faulty ?
