Having not really driven my 300tdi in almost 18 months it would seem it's MOT time tomorrow, last year it failed on excessive smoke (had only just had fresh oil and new filters) we managed through a combination of injector cleaner additive, fiddling with the pump and getting it nice and hot to scrape a pass. So in preparation for tomorrow's not I've been trying a few things to get it a bit less smoky, cleaned out the intercooler and pipework and re routed the oil breather to a catch tank as it was blowing a bit of oil vapour into the inlet. I then started looking at the pump, have read a few of the pump tuning guides, popped the top off the diaphragm chamber and couldn't get the diaphragm and pin out, seemed like it had got a bit of moisture in at some point, prob through the breather and seized. Eventually managed to free it up and get it out, freed up the follower pin too, thought I'd try adjusting the star wheel but it seems to be stuck fast, I pushed back the little clip thing (is that removable? Couldn't get it out with the needle nose) and tried a few gentle taps with a hammer and hitting screwdriver but only succeeded in gouging chunks out of the rim. Any bright ideas? Is there any special tool available like a big star wheel socket or something? Or do I need to think about having the pump rebuilt, in which case any recommendations for someone who can do that, preferably in Sussex so I can actually go see them rather than having to post it!
