I have just recently removed this and replaced lift pump and fuel filler to sort a ticking problem from my injection pump which has rectified the problem . The sedimeter bowl was full of crap and emulsified inside however I have joined the two pipes together and was wondering do I really need that bowl as the defenders don't have them so is it ok to run without it ???? Or would it be better to put a inline filter between the hoses as the first port of call from the tank will be the lift pump .... What do you guys think ?

Gwyn Lewis told me to sack the lot off, and just join the two ends of the pipe.
Fenders don't have them atall I don't think? So can't be much of in issue.
You still have a fuel filter anyways, so that can do its job

I think I'm right in saying that the next in line after the fuel sedimenter in the lift pump - so if you don't have the FS then you could end up with crâp in the fuel pump.

I would always recommend keeping the FS and cleaning it out regularly.

mines comming off as soon as it gets warmer useless bit of kit ive never touched in over 2 years , and hasnt altered performance in anyway if its full with crud

I would not want to be replacing a lift pump every time it clogged with a bit of rubbish - or water...http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=79858&hl=

Be cheaper and easier to replace an in-line filter or have a sedimenter to remove it first!!

but that said - the tank pick up pipe has a filter on it too, or it should have - as I have seen 2 without, (bleedy Friday arvo cars) :D

Am I right in saying the sedimeter does not have a filter as such in it anyway ? .... I'm going to fit an inline one to be safe as has been said I don't want to be replacing the lift pump all the time seeing as fuel hits that before the fuel filter  ... Can the lift pump be taken apart to clean it ? .. Mine looks like it can ???? . Thanks for the replies guys

Hi BM, you are right to say that the sedimenter doesn't have a filter in it, but they way it is shaped allows bits of sediment to drop out of the fuel flow, it also separates off any water - that's it's function.

I can see how an in-line filter will stop bits of muck from getting to the fuel pump, but not water.

Some fuel pumps have a removable lid with a gauze filter underneath, some don't.

unless you fill your tank from dirty cans etc you wont have an issue , it takes years of neglect for sedimentors to get cruddy ,under normal conditions that little comntaminents go through lift pump it makes no difference , another issue with an aluminum sedimentor bolted to steel chassis
