no trouble going in to 2nd gear from first, but getting into it from 3rd means i have to slow right down (virtual dead stop) to avoid an occasional nasty grinding noise. my guess is the clutch isn't the problem, as i have no trouble with third. mind you, i guessed wales would beat england two weeks ago too. :(

any ideas? is it worth doing anything about? my old man said i should just live with it. (the last time he said that the back axle fell off my cavalier mind...)

edit - sorry, series 3, 2.25 petrol, no overdrive, ex MoD, synchro box

assuming youve got a synchro box, id say the synchros are on the way out.
exhange box sounds like the answer.

Hi ishmael,
I reckon its one of the three detent springs on yer synchro, the best way to describe them is like small metal "coathangers". I had this problem on a hybrid many moons ago, I dropped the oil and one came out with the oil in two pieces.

Regards WP.

Learn to double the clutch, both up & down the gears, and gear changes should get much smoother, until you get the cause of the problem fixed. That is if you need to once you start doubling the clutch.
