I know theres loads a threads on this but ive never heard any1 talk about nething other than using a landrover alternator..... is there any reason that i cant just go down a breakers yard and use any old alternator (the biggest one i can find) providin it fits in the space obviously and i can fabricate the mounting bracket for it. my aim is to have a second alternator powerin a second batterry.... for ma winch sound system and eventualy an inverter. might even put the spot lights on the second batterry. All this to preserve my main batteries life an ensure im never too flat to start the engine.

cheers guys any comments appreciated

No reason whatsoever so long as you can fabricate bracketry, find suitable pulleys and drive belts. Also you need to know what you are doing with the wiring but other than that is a doddle.

Cheers shifty..... ive heard about those split charge systems skeleton, but arent they pricey? And also would ot not mean you have buy an upgraded alternator anyway to replace your original.... so you dont burn it out by pilling twice as much charge outa it?

the bit you need is £10 plus a bit of wire and connectors to run from your alternator to the module. then earth to chassis. then wire to aux fuse box. the upgraded alternator cost me £55 brand new cant remember where from though, it was online. not saying its the only way to do it its just a way i do it and it works. the module is a clever little thing that trickles the charge in and shuts it off when your battery is full. the extra alternator is not difficult to do and works fine when done right

Ok mate cheers for the info... my mates been look at split charge so ill point him in maplins dieection.... i think im probly gona stik wit my orginal plannof second alternator, i just like the idea of havin two of em, got a back up that way if one fails. but your way seems just as good mate

great. thats the best thing with landies they are so modular. bolt off bolt on (or grind off bolt on:p) and it can be limitless. best of luck
