Hi..
New here, been looking at Bembles posts on L322 auto v8 box issues...
Just limped back from Cornwall with trans fail safe.
If someone can advise please.
2002 v8 4.4 5spd auto vogue .

Few days ago...went to pull out of a lane 1st auto and bang- trans fail message.
Got home..checked obvious and all seemed attached..lol
Few days later, no warnings, drives fine.
Leave for Cornwall.. maybe its last time with fuel prices..all OK.
Pulled away at services 1st-2/3/2/3/2 shown on dash - 4th trans fail safe
Continued as almost there.
High fuel consumption, no power..obviously only in 4th.
Read forums .. poss gear selector, potentiometer, ign switch etc
Got home...crept upto A30 in manual mode, was OK until had to stop on hill at roundabout..bang 2/3/2/4 trans fail safe.
4th for 160miles

Check youtube- seems if it goes 1st bang failsafe..its 1st gear pack gone ?? New/recon box

Now I don't know if its worth trying everything else suggested or its a false economy before having to change box..

Please, any advise helpful as I'm not a rich Rangey owner, I'm a fan that pushes through the icons foibles ...owned mainly mk1 rr until this dream 2002 L322.

Thanks in advance.
If someone has Bembles email I would appreciate it .
From what I have read Mr B is a genius with these and his much sought after pearls of wisdom would be most useful before my brain implodes

How certain are you that your transmission is failing safe to 4th gear rather than to 5th? This is very significant.

Hi..thanks for response.
Fairly certain..in manual mode it reverted to 4th and would not change. Put back into auto D and revs were at same 4th gear 70mph . Around 2800ish..in 5th on mway usually around 2500/2600 and more fuel use.
So I think it was 4th...
The concern for me was the big bang as it jumps out of 1st and it then feels like 4th from there .
Thanks again for response...any ideas to move forward bud?

A common problem with the 5HP24 transmission, particularly in the L322, results in an issue with the A clutch. As the A clutch is used in gears 1, 2, 3 & 4 the transmission consequently fails safe into 5th. However, as your transmission fails safe into 4th (A & B clutches applied) – which is the default/correct failsafe gear – this opens up the number of possible causes massively. Can you get access to some diagnostic kit to read the codes? Unfortunately, a generic OBD II reader isn’t much use, it has to be capable of reading specific Land Rover fault codes.

If you select Manual mode from stationary and upshift and downshift through the gears manually the whole time that you’re driving, does the fault still occur?

Hi..I used manual mode, applying throttle very carefully from wadebridge to bodmin..very hilly.
All OK until last roundabout where I had to come to complete stop on a hill, applied throttle carefully and big bang about 5mph ,gear selector on dash went 2/3/2/3/4 warning came up trans fail safe..flicked across into D, no difference, back to manual -says 4th- crawled up hill and pulled over.
Reset by turning off.
Started - into manual , carefully 12345 onto A30..ok.
Pulled off at services..same as above, then trans fail came up ,sat in 4th manual..put in D..no change in revs..drove all way up m5 like that.
Off at Glos.. reset.. 1st/bang/4th..drove home

Hope this makes sense.
I am fully prepared to test potentiometers, strip neutral safety switch etc.
I have mechanical experience, just not auto boxes.
I only have basic code reader ..so I need to get codes from somewhere before you can go much further..
Never used a landy dealer ,would they tell me what I actually need to know?
Or would the average garage have the kit to read RR trans codes ?

.....but not sure I want to buy it until I find actual cause
Totally agree. If it turned out to be an issue with, say, your inhibitor switch (= fault code P0705) the replacement transmission probably wouldn’t have a switch on it anyway and you’d be expected to use your old one.

If you’re thinking you’ll be keeping the vehicle for a while it might be worth considering investing in a GAP IIDTool, or similar, for diagnosing all the other problems you’ll be having in the future!:)

Thankyou for your help...
I was looking at diagnostic kit but wasn't sure which would be suitable..so your advice is appreciated.
I have spoken to a local garage who can't read the codes but knows a reliable/honest chap that can..waiting on a call.
Hopefully I will get codes soon and be able to move forward ( literally )
Thanks again, I will be back and update you/pick brains later

If you want cheap diag then look at Storey Wilson's website. Basic but does most jobs. Just need a cable.

Update..maybe someone can confirm issue from this??
Snap on scanned and result was ..
Gear monitor fault
Gear monitor 1 fault
No actual code ‍♂️ .. Reading about the diesel @Bemble mentioned monitor faults were caused by clutch slip confusing speed/gear readings making it go to trans fail.
I realise that's a different box but I'm grasping at anything now...
Is it likely clutch 1 slipping , is that a box rebuild rather than a switch etc ??
( shoot me now )
Sorry for sounding random but auto boxes are myth n magic to me...why don't they do manuals on L322's
