Hi all,

I have a 200tdi 110, that I am currently working through a long list of jobs that need doing to bring the old girl back.

I replaced the front section on the exhaust and since then I am getting screeching metalic noise, only when the engine is warm and it is only in first and second gear when accelerating or decelerating and not constantly.

The noise seems to run in time with the wheel speed it starts as a slow speed and builds as I speed up and when into 3rd it goes.

Front prop shaft is new, I have greased all the relevant nipples front and back tonight took her for a drive once warm back comes the noise.

Did notice last night that the transfer box is leaking alot more than usual from the output
shaft

Got a new output shaft seal, bearing etc on order could it be the bearing or could it be something more siniister?

Defender or disco engine conversion?
I would say if the noise wasnt there before its likely to be something you have done.

Defender 200tdi original engine. The noise wasn't there before, the exhast was very tight to fit and took some serious elbow grease to fit it and bolt up, could that be causing the issue?

Have you checked the manifold to head bolts to see if they are tight, inlet manifold gaskets can leak causing a high pitch whistle s the pressurised air is forced out of the tight gap

No but I will do shortly, thanks, because the exhaust was tight, could that be pushing the engine, gear and transfer box out of line and creating some friction somewhere?

Just thinking out loud here not a clue what it is as I thought it sounded like the uj's.

Have read it could be clutch, any ideas how I could test that?

Cheers.

Maybe best to post you location up and see if a local LZ member will have a look for you, otherwise you could end up wasting money

Glasgow is where I am. My mate rekons it's gearbox and that he had the same noise on his 200tdi and it just went away...like so many of the other noises that come and go.

Aye, after some further investigative driving, I strongly suspect the rear wheel, maybe a dry bearing. I will see as the day progresses
